INSTRUMENT REMINDER LIST

MR. WARFIELD – INSTRUCTOR

The following list of instruments may help you remember the different choices that are available for your beginning music instruction.  A brief description of how each instrument looks is included.

WOODWIND FAMILY

1.       FLUTE – The color of the flute is silver.  It has many keys for your fingers.  You blow across the tone hole to produce the flute tones.

2.       OBOE – The oboe is black with silver keys.  It has a small double reed for a mouthpiece.

3.       CLARINET – The color of the clarinet is black and it has many silver keys.  You blow into a mouthpiece with a wooden reed attached to produce the clarinet tones.

4.       ALTO SAXOPHONE – The color of the alto saxophone is gold.  It is larger than the clarinet and has many keys for your fingers.  The saxophone also uses a reed to produce the sound.

BRASS FAMILY

1.        TRUMPET – The trumpet is a gold or silver colored instrument.  The trumpet has three valves that help the player to change tones.  You buzz your lips into a mouthpiece to make the trumpet tones.

2.        FRENCH HORN – The horn is similar to the trumpet with more curved tubing but a smaller mouthpiece.  It has a large end piece of bell.  Three valves help the player to change tones as they buzz their lips into the mouthpiece.

3.        BARITONE HORN – The baritone horn often reminds students of the tuba, but it is smaller.  The baritone horn has three valves like trumpet and the horn.  The baritone has a large mouthpiece.

4.        TROMBONE – This instrument is often called the “slide trombone”.  It has a long movable tube or slide that is moved to change the length of the instrument and the tones that are produced.  The player buzzes their lips into the mouthpiece to make the trombone sound.

PERCUSSION FAMILY

1.        DRUMS and BELLS  - Any instrument that is struck or hit with the hands, sticks, or mallets belong to the percussion family.  The student who makes this choice will study the bells and snare drum.  The student will also learn different auxiliary percussion instruments.

STRING FAMILY

1.       VIOLIN – The violin is the smallest member of the string family.  The violin can produce the highest notes of the stringed instruments.

2.       VIOLA – The viola is shaped and held like the violin.  It is a little larger and can produce lower tones than the violin.

3.       CELLO – The cello is quite a bit larger than the violin and viola. The cello is played in a seated position with the instrument resting on the floor.

4.       BASS – The largest member of the string family is the stringed bass.  The bass player usually stands while playing the bass.
